We can work with all kinds of different foundations, but we specialise in pod floor systems. Our favorites are Allied Super Slab and Firth Rib Raft. Here’s a rundown of what they are, why we like them, and why we recommend them to our customers.
WHAT THEY ARE
Super Slab and Rib Raft are both examples of pod floors. These work by pouring concrete over polystyrene pods, reinforcing steel and mesh. The steel and mesh strengthen the foundations, and the polystyrene pods create air cavities, which makes the foundations better insulators - great for keeping homes nice and warm.
One key difference between these foundations and other foundations is that they sit on the ground rather than in the ground. This has a number of benefits, from seismic strength to faster, easier installation.
Seismically, these are a great option in a shaky area like Wellington. They outperformed other foundations in the Christchurch earthquakes, and we’re confident they’d do the same here. This is because they sit on the ground, so they can slide if there is a rupture underneath them - rather than split in half.
From a construction point of view, they’re faster and easier than other solutions. Here’ why:
This is the best thing about Super Slab and Rib Raft. Since these foundations sit on the ground, you don’t have to excavate. The only earthworks are to make sure everything is flat and stable - this means minimal digging, less fill to deal with, and no footings to excavate.
This has two main benefits: one is that we can complete these foundations faster than other foundations. The other is that we take up less space on the site. This leaves room for things like material staging for the next step of the process.
LOTS OF REPETITION
Repetition is another aspect that makes things fast and easy. There are a few key common elements to every Super Slab or Rib Raft foundation - the pods, the spacers, the reinforcing steel and (of course) the concrete. This means we have designed repeatable, scalable processes for installing these foundations. This makes scheduling easier for us, and more reliable for our customers.
WEATHER DOESN'T HOLD US BACK
These solutions are fairly simple. Since we don’t have to dig footings, there’s less heavy machinery and fewer power tools. This means we can keep working on rainy days - which aren’t exactly uncommon in Wellington! While our guys may not love working in the rain, they can still do it, and get the jobs done on schedule. This helps you meet your milestones and deliver the finished product on time.
When you look at these aspects combined, you can see why we recommend Allied Super Slab and Firth Rib Raft. They’re easier for us, faster for home builders, and deliver a solid, warm solution for homeowners. Hard to find fault with that!
